Islam Paragraph

Please post a one paragraph description of what you would like to learn about in Islam. You can do some initial research, but keep the research brief. I'm more interested in you explaining what question you want to explore and why it's interesting to you. Your paragraph should be about four sentences long, and should begin with "I am interested in learning more about ..."

I would like to learn more about the dome of the rock. I have seen it from the Western Wall and want to learn more about its significance and the history behind it. I don’t know much about it, except for that it is one of the buildings for worship in the old city of Jerusalem. I also know that during the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel took control of the Dome of the Rock which led to victory. My Grandpa fought in that war and I think it'd be cool to learn more about it. I want to know what the Dome of the Rock has been through since it has been built and about how it is today.

I would like to learn more about the Islamic holiday of Ramadan. It is the only holiday that is well-publicized...i.e., that most non-Muslims know at least a little about. I think the idea of fasting all day is very interesting. Also, the reading mentioned that there are other activities besides fasting that one must refrain from during this period, and that certain groups of people are excepted from participation in Ramadan. A few specific things I'd like to know are: what other activities are not allowed, who are these groups of people that get exceptions, and what are the consequences for not fasting during Ramadan?

for my Islam topic, i would like to learn about women's roles. more specifically, i would like to know how women effected the society and how they were treated. and depending on how they were treated, i would like to know why. i would also like to know the roles women played in the government, or if they were even allowed to have a say in what happened in the government. I would also like to learn about the code of dress for women, and why it came to be. I would like to learn all about the role of women in Islam because I have been interested in the role that women play in every society since the beginning of the year. In fact, one of my goals was to learn about the role of women in each society we learned about.

I would like learn more about the Dome of the Rock. I have heard about it many times through videos and previous history lessons. Things that specifically relate to the Dome of the Rock that I especially want to learn is the religious significance, not only to people of the Islamic faith, but others too. I know that there is a lot of controversy to which religion should own the area around it. I've also heard that Israel took control of it after the 6-day war.

I would like to learn more about the spread of Islam. Islam seemed to catch on really fast and spread into the Byzantine Empire, to Morocco, and to the Indus River. I know that the people that were conquered pretty much had a choice to convert or die. However, I want to find out more on why they stopped where they did as Islam could be everywhere by now, how was Islam able to spread in such a short period of time, and finally how the conversion still stands. Like, if the people in those territories still follow Islam. This seems interesting because this spread as fast as something like the Plague.

I am interested in learning more about the pilgrimage to Mecca. I have heard about it from different sources, but I have never fully been able to grasp everything about it. I know that all Muslims are expected to go to Mecca if financially able. However, that is the conclusion of my knowledge on the topic, so I would like to learn more.

I would like to learn more about the conflict between the Sunni and the Shi'a. I know from class that this conflict came about from who people believed should be Mohamed's heir. From the reading tonight I learned they also have different beliefs, for example on the Sunni use the five pilars and while the Shi'a do have similar beliefs they aren't quite the same. There is also conflict going on today in the Middle East that has to do with these divisions. I think that it would be interesting to study the journey that these to portions of Islam have taken and how they interact. I also wonder if these divisons were anything like the divisions of the Christian church and if there is hope that they could ever learn to make peace with one another and live out Mohamed's goal of one religion united by Allah.

I am interested in learning about women's roles in Islam, and more specifically the choice to wear the head scarf. I've heard that they wear it so they will not be judged on their appearance. I would like to know if all females have to wear it at a certain age, or if they have a choice. I also want to know if there are certain exeptions to wearing the headscarf, or if they have to wear it 24/7.

From the reading tonight, i learned about the black stone embedded in the Kaba. I would like to know more about this stone and why it is so significant. I also want to know why many devout Muslims are debating whether to leave it accessible to the public, or hide it for protection from damage. I also want to know more about the history of the Kaba in general, and why it became such a significant holy site in the Islamic World.

I want to learn more about how the Muslims contributed to math and science in and before the Dark Ages. I also want to learn about how those contributions have stuck with us today. If the Muslims had not taken over so much and started this renaissance, would our lives be different? I want to learn about this because I like science and math and want to learn more about how they developed, since I know that the Muslims played a crucial role back then and today with science and math.

I would most like to learn about the Hajj, or the pilgrimage. It is one of the five pillars, and obviously very imporant to the relgion (also from the number of people each year who do it). It it something that is completely foreign to me but is fasicinating. Fasicinating in that it is the largest pilrimage in the world (but not human migration -- thats in China), and that it is so important.

I would like to learn more about the practices of Islam i.e. more about the Five Pillars, laws, etiquette, and Jihad. I am interested in these items because I think how people from different religions live on a day to day basis. I'd like to be able to understand their duties to the religion versus their duties to the state or their family as well as how and how much they pray. Also, I would like to find out how people who practice Islam have to change their diet in order to maintain their religious views. Because all the things I seem to be interested in fall in the category of every day life and practices, that is what I would like to study.

I would be interested in learning more about Muhammad's life during the 23 years he wrote the Koran (it is said the angel Gabriel revealed things to him over a long period of time). It would be interesting to see the parallels between Muhammad's life pre and post revelation, and how he adjusted his system of belief over time. How did it affect others around him? We know about broad examples, like the slowing of trade due to his preaching, but what about on a smaller scale?

I would like to learn more about the Dome of the Rock. It was just barely mentioned in the video and it really sparked my interest. The part in the video stated that it was one of the gathering places for both Christians and Muslims. I want to learn about why it is such a gathering place and I want to learn more about why it is such a special place.

I would also like to learn about womens rights like Bretty. I would really like to get to know if women were allowed to do anything because i know in some countries now that some women have to have separate parts of the house to stay in when their husband has guest over (i think that is in Dubai). I would also like to learn what activities or things they did if they couldn't leave the house.

I am interested in learning more about the early periods of Islam, especially when it spreads rapidly until around 750. I want to learn more about the resistance the religion faced in its spread. I know that the Islamics had to fight against many of the desert tribes in its early years, but were there any major conflicts after that? I find it somewhat hard to believe that the rest of the early Islamic empire fell without a fight. It seems like some of the other religions/peoples would have acted similarly to the desert tribes, albeit maybe in less of a violent fashion.

I am interested in learning more about the spread of Islam. I would like to learn what the major difficulties in the spreading were, and, like I have already mentioned in a seperate post, I would like to learn how the Muslims forced their religion on other people. After the religion gained some momentum in its expansion, did people just start converting, or did the armies have to spread it by force? If they did continue to force it all the way to Christian territory, could the Crusades be justified as a delayed counterattack or revenge, as more of a reaction than a first move.

I would like to learn more about the five pillars of Islam. Theses five pillars are extremely important to the religion. The religion is based off of the pillars and every person who practices Islam knows about the five pillars and knows that they are supposed to abide by the five pillars. Each pillar has something different and special about it to all people. There is lots and lots of information about the five pillars as well so I will be able to cover this topic very thoroughly.

I would like to learn what sparked the fighting that is going on today in the Middle East and around the world between Muslims and others. Did this start 3000 years ago or is it 1000 years ago or less than 100 years? Why haven't they settled their arguments yet? Why was the first crusade succesful and the other three unsuccesful?
