Memorial Day

Please post at least three sentences about what you learned about Memorial Day and/or questions you have about the holiday. Why (and how) do we celebrate this day?

I knew that memorial day was to honor veteran soldiers. I learned that it was formally known as Decoration Day. I also learned that it was first created to honor Union soldiers in the Civil War.

I do not do anything to observe this day other than not go to school, I do know that some people go to military memorials in honor for the soldiers.

Memorial day is a holiday to honor the people that have died in any war. It started after the Civil War to signify the end of the war and the people that died. The Memorial Day officially started in Waterloo, NY. On Memorial Day flags are flown at half mast.

I really didn't know much about Memorial Day before reasearching it (I got it confused with veterans day). From this site I learned that it is traced back to the Civil War. I also learned that the birthplace of memorial day is in Waterloo,NY. The site says that one of the reasons that the Memorial Day celebrations were spread was because of the famous friendship between 2 generals (General Logan and General Murray) that happened on Memorial day in 1866.

The first thing I learned from the Wikipedia article is that Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day. Another thing that interested me was that the Click It or Ticket campaign starts on Memorial Day weekend because it is the most dangerous season for car accidents. Besides America, many other countries have a similar veteran remembrance day. I would like to know specifically how other countries celebrate this holiday, like any special activities or food?

Memorial Day is a day of recognition for all the people who have fought in any war or military action. I found some facts about Memorial Day and had some questions about them. It is celebrated on the last Monday of May each year. Why is it celebrated on the last Monday of May? Waterloo, New York is the birthplace of Memorial Day. Why is it the birthplace?

I had previously known that Memorial Day was a day for soldiers who (obviously) were being remembered. I found out that this was first used during the post-Civil War era for Union soldiers who had fallen. Also, after World War I, it became a holiday for any fallen soldier. I would like to know how the government specifically honors those in Iraq on Memorial Day (if at all) since we are still currently occupying that region.

I know that memorial day is a day of remembering those who lost their lives in war. But my question is why is it a day where we miss school and some people are off work? why dont we have more ways to show our thanks and honor? Are there lots of specials on was during this day? I wish that we could show our honor and thanks little more.

Memorial Day started out as a day to remember not just all veterans, but specifically civil war veterans. But today is a combination of declaration day of family graves (which is the part that remembers the people who actually fought in the war) and sadly enough, the other part is the commercial holiday. What started out as a day to honor those who fought and died for our country, has turned into a commercialized day to get out of school, go to barbeques and parties, and to hit the beach (while some do actually honor and go to old memorials, most do not). Businesses see it as a time to sell cars or clothes.

And to answer Katelyn's question about Waterloo being the birthplace, it is because in waterloo, New York, people were honoring and decorating the graves of lost soldiers the earliest. As early as 1866.

I know that Memorial Day is a day to remember U.S. men and women who fought in the military serving their country. I decided to look at memorial days around the world and not only in the U.S. My mom had told me that in Israel, there is Yom Hazikaron. On this day, victims of terrorism, Israeli Soldiers. and many others are remembered. The day includes many national ceremonies. At one point in the day, a one-minute siren goes off during which most Israelis stand in silence, commemorating the fallen and showing respect. Many Jews say prayers for the souls of the fallen soldiers at this time as well. The official ceremony to mark the opening of the day takes place at the Western Wall, at which time the flag of Israel is lowered to half mast. Like in Israel, I believe there should be a way for people here to show respect and stop what they're doing for at least a minute of the day. Most people don't really do anything other than get off from school and work. Like Taelor said, I think people could show our honor and thanks a little more.

I already know that memorial day is a day off from school and work to celebrate soldiers that have served the country. From wikipedia, I learned that it is celebrated on the last Monday in may ( I thought it was random), and that it was formerly known as Decoration Day. It states that many people visit cemeteries and memorials to honor lost loved ones. Also there is a national moment of remembrance that supposedly happens at 3 PM, which I have never recalled happening. Other supposed traditions are flying of U.S. flag from dawn until noon, and a memorial day parade in some towns. An interesting fact i did not know of was that it was originally a holiday to commemorate soldiers from the Union during the civil war, but when the U.S. became one country again, the holiday was expanded to include any soldier.

Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, was created to honor the soldiers that live and die fighting to defend our country. There are many ways in which Memorial Day is celebrated, many of which are often forgotten. Childrne have a day off school, many restaurants and stores are closed, and parades are held in many communities. Some people have a moment of silence and visit war memorials. The American flag is supposed to be flown at half-staff out of respect all day, but people often forget. I would like to know who came up with the idea of Memorial Day and how soldiers overseas celebrate this holiday to honor them.

I knew that Memorial Day was a day when school was out and government offices were closed. I also knew that it was a day to honor those who had died in war.

I learned that it was started to honor union soldiers who died in the civil war. I found it interesting that it did not grow to include other casualties until WWI. I also went on a quick tangent to flying flags at half-staff. I found out this is done because the invisible flag of death is flying above the normal flag.

All I really know about Memorial Day is that it honors veterans and we get off school for it. To learn more about it, I went to the Wikipedia article linked on the Homework page. I found out that it was created to honor civil war veterans. It was originally celebrated on May 5, but was moved to May 30th a few years later specifically because there had not been a battle on May 30th. Then, about 40 years ago, the holiday was moved to the last Monday in May, where it is today.

I found at this site that Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. The earliest decoration of graves (not quite known if being celebrated as what we know as Memorial Day) dated back to a women's group before the Civil War. Also, the "northern states" celebrated the holiday on May 30 since 1868 and the "southern states" celebrated it on different days until after WWI.

Memorial Day started out as a holiday created to honor soldiers who had fought and died for the United States of America. It started just after the Civil War and has since then has come to include current men and woman serving our country. People celebrate the holiday by decorating graves of soldiers as well as sending care packages to soldiers over seas. In Washington, DC they have the National Memorial Day parade , that consists of many war veterans. Memorials in DC also have many people visit them to remember the people the monuments were built for.

All that I knew about memorial day was that it was to remember veteran soldiers who had fought for our country. One thing that I found out was that it was to honor fallen soldiers in battle not just veteran soldiers. My question was, is there a special service around the Raleigh area on Memorial day to honor those soldiers?

The only thing I knew about memorial day was that it was a day to honor soldiers, and that it was a day off from school.

I learned that it was also known as Decoration Day, as well as the fact that flags are flown at half mass on this day. I learned that it occurs on the final Monday of May every year.

Sorry, I don't know how to edit my previous post. But the reason that I was unable to post by 9 was because I was out of town at the Lacrosse championships and my flight just got in at 10.
