I am interested in learning more about gold in Ghana. Ghana is also nicknamed the "land of gold", which it was because of how much gold it contained. There was a ton of gold trade which caused Ghana to turn into a greater country in West Africa. I think it's interesting to think about how all of this gold controlled a lot of people's lives whether it be their job, the way they live, trade, how much food they eat, and many household items were made out of it. I'm also interested in learning about how salt came into play for trading from the Sahara desert and why salt was so important to these people.

Early on in the Great Zimbabwe reading it mentions how denizens of Great Zimbabwe practiced agriculture and animal husbandry (particularly with cattle). The reading goes on to say that these practices lead to Zimbabwe's detriment, over farmed and degraded land. I would be interested in writing a brief compare/contrast between Jared Diamond's argument and Zimbabwe's agricultural practices.

I want to learn more about Gao mainly because we have mentioned and learned about Timbuktu and Djenne in class, but we didn't mention the third tran-Saharan city of Gao. I already know that it was a center of trade and learning which can lead to many advances and diverse culture. It was founded in the 7th century and became the Songhai Empire. Because of this, Gao would give an insight into the time and the Songhai Empire. For these reasons and general interest, I wanted to study and learn more about Gao.

i am interested in learning about important women in africa. this was a difficult topic to search, but after some directions from Mr. G. i decided to choose Wangari Maathai, who is the first african woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. although i normally choose topic about women in general, Wangari Maathai seemed like a interesting topic and a nice change of pace, while still sticking to my original interest of women in different cultures.

I am interested in learning more about Gertrude Caton Thompson and her all female excavation. I thought it was very interesting about how she looked at the ruins and saw that they were traces of african orgins. I also thought it was cool how she had my birthday even though that is an unrelated fact. She also made me interested in how she compared these ancient sites to other ones and later wrote a book on it.

I am interested in learning about the city of Timbuktu. In the readings we have had, Timbuktu is portrayed as the biggest city of the Mali empire. Many people from the Arab empire came here to study and learn and Timbuktu is probably the most legendary cities in Africa. It used to be one of the largest in Africa, however, it is much smaller now.

I am interested in learning about African music, specifically the influence of Islam on African music and the music of some of the cultures we have studied (Ghana, Mali, Songhai). I am interested in pretty much all music, and would love to learn more about the culture of the places we've studied, since we didn't learn much more than a basic overview. African music has also had a large influence on American music, so it's something I feel is worth learning about.

I am interested in learning more about the ruins of Zimbabwe. The ruins of Zimbabwe are the remains of what was once was a great trading civilization. I believe that by learning about the ruins, I will also be able to learn more about trading in the civilization. The ruins are also spiritual and religious centers in Zimbabwe and since I am usually interested in religion, it will allow me to look more into that as well.

I would like to learn more about the natural resources in Africa (gold, diamonds, salt). I find it interesting that at one point in history 90% of diamonds in the world belonged to one company, and their diamonds were mostly in Africa. It's interesting that even in present day, where more land and has been discovered, and technology is more advanced, that they still control 60% of the world's diamonds. Another reason why I want to learn about this topic is that if they have so many resources, why are they in a large economic deficit?

I want to learn more about Carl Mauch. He was the first person to go to Great Zimbabwe so I want to know what he did on his visit. I want to know why he decided to go there or if it was by accident. I also want to learn what other important things he did related to Africa.

I am interested in learning about what happened with everyone before and after Richard Hall's "works" in Zimbabwe. Who was the frist to suggest that the ruins weren't built by the native Zimabwians? Who was the first one to say that Richard Hall was wrong? I'm interested in this because I would like to know more about this because they were evidently able to change history for a while without anyone but themselves realizing it.

I am interested in learning more about African Trade in Western Africa. Trade in Western Africa is very important because 3 Major Kingdoms came out of that area including Ghana, Mali, and the Songhai. Also, trade was very important in the fact that there were 3 main trade items; Gold, Salt, and Iron. These things were very important to Africa and vital in these Kingdom's success and prosperity.

I am interested in storytelling in Ghana. I want to learn more about the griots and how they memorized the stories and the whole town's family history. I think the "oral tradition" is interesting because it is different than how history is recoreded today (it's outloud instead of written down).

I want to learn more about salt in Africa. I would like to learn more about where and how it was traded, where it was mined, and just a general idea of how people back then used salt and its importance. I am interested in this topic because salt was so important and expensive in Africa, so I want to learn more about this important resource.

I am intersted in the dogs that originated and developed in Africa. From my knowldge of dogs and a little bit of research i found that there are at least eight differnt dogs that have come out of Africa. This includes the Rhodesian Ridgeback, The Saluki, the Pharoah Hound, The Ibizan Hound, the Azawakh, the Sloughi, the Basenji, and the Boerbeol. It is pretty much self explaintory why i would choose dogs, beucase i have such a great interst in them.

I am interested in learning about the similarities and interactions if there were any, of the Ghana, Mali, and Songhai kingdoms. I already know that the muslims traveled through that region and spread Islam, which is the reason for these kingdoms adopting the religion. These people had many resources, such as Ghana, which was abundant in gold.

I am interested in learning about the situation in Nigeria right now. It turns out that Nigeria has oil reserves, which is having many effects on Nigeria. I may also look into if Nigeria may turn into the "land of oil" in Africa.

I am interested in Mansa Musa. I know that Mansa Musa was a king in fourteenth century CE. He ruled the Mali Empire. Mansa Musa was thought to be the grandson of Sundiata, who was the starter of the Mali Empire. He is known for taking over the city of Gao, as well as going on a Hajj to Mecca.

I am interested in learning about the trade routes of the main African Empires. What resources did they gain from trading away their resources? I am also wondering about the state of the people who they trade with. In comparison, who got the better end of the African trades?

I would like to write about the trade routes in Africa mainly focused on the North and Ghana regions where Islam reached. I want to see what was traded, how things were exchanged and who traded it. I also think it would be interesting to look at the Islam amd other ideas that spread along these routes. Many things that shaped the society located there today came from this time period, including the Masques and the language.
